JCS Computer Services CorporationPresident and CEO Mr. Ikuo Matsuo
Director of Sales Department Mr. Ikuo Miyazawa
JCS became a FLEXSCHE partner in 2005 and has accumulated implementation achievements through years of steady sales activities. We spoke with President and CEO Mr. Ikuo Matsuo and Sales Department Director Mr. Ikuo Miyazawa about the journey from the encounter with FLEXSCHE to getting the business on track, and collaboration with other FLEXSCHE partners.
Founded in Joetsu in 1973

-
FLEXSCHE
-
Please tell us the origin of the company name 'JCS Computer Service Corporation'.
-
JCS Matsuo
-
First, JCS is an abbreviation for 'Joetsu Computer Service'.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Oh? Does that mean "Computer Service" is repeated in the company name?
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
Yes. Originally, we wanted to name it 'Joetsu Computer Service' following our sister company 'Niigata Computer Service' (at the time), but due to registration issues, we couldn't, so at the time of founding, we named it 'Joetsu Electronic Computing Center Corporation'. However, we at least wanted to use the abbreviation JCS, and by the time of the company name change in 1989, JCS had already become established in the region, so we included it in the company name as it was.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
I see. Could you tell us about the business form? How has it changed from the time of founding to the present?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
The main business at the time of founding, contract calculation services, dwindled, and we shifted to selling office computers and personal computers, software development, etc. Now, the focus is on scratch development of systems for manufacturing, construction, service industries, etc. We also dispatch engineers and programmers to customers' sites.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
You started handling FLEXSCHE in 2005, but did you originally have many manufacturing customers?
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
Since it's a small area, we need to cater to a wide range of industries, and we had various customers, but manufacturing was not particularly numerous. Previously, we specialized in liquor wholesalers, and even though it was sales operations, liquor had some peculiarities in terms of taxes. In terms of manufacturing, we handled systems for inventory management of raw materials, and at one point, we even had a branch office within a customer's factory to conduct business on-site.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Currently, you have a wide commercial area, not limited to Joetsu, right?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Joetsu is at the western end of Niigata Prefecture and quite far from Niigata City. Rather, Nagano and Hokuriku are more accessible, so we expanded our sales area outside the prefecture, and now we have customers in a wide area centered within the prefecture. Since we started handling FLEXSCHE, it has become easier to approach manufacturing, but there are not many manufacturers in the prefecture, and there are far more in Nagano and Hokuriku. The farthest customer is in Fukui.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Fukui! With such a wide commercial area, isn't it difficult for salespeople to travel?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Yes, indeed. Fukui is as far as Tokyo, so we hope to find partners in each region to collaborate with in the future.
The Trigger for Meeting FLEXSCHE Was
"To Make My Wife's Work Easier"

-
FLEXSCHE
-
Our relationship with JCS began in 2005 when Mr. Matsuo contacted us. At that time, you mentioned that there weren't many manufacturing customers, so why did you become interested in FLEXSCHE?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Actually, my wife worked in manufacturing and was responsible for production planning, raw material arrangements, and delivery date responses to customers. She often brought work home and seemed to be struggling quite a bit. Seeing that, I thought, "Isn't there something I can do to help?" That was the original trigger. After researching various options, I came across FLEXSCHE.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
To help your wife! What a wonderful husband you are!!
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Initially, it was purely personal interest. Of course, I also felt the potential to connect it to business, so I made an inquiry.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Shortly after that, we had a meeting at our company. Could you tell us your impression of FLEXSCHE at that time?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
When I first saw the demo, I was impressed by the visual impact. At that time, I had only dealt with text-based systems, and in contrast, FLEXSCHE used graphics abundantly in its interface, which alone heightened my expectations. Of course, I couldn't evaluate everything just from that opportunity, and I remember thinking that I needed to understand it well myself. However, I immediately mentioned in an internal meeting that it was an interesting system and that I wanted to try it.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
What was the trigger for you to participate as a partner afterward?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Your company suggested that even if it didn't lead to orders, we could try it as a door-knock product, so I thought I might as well participate. Around that time, I received information from your company about a project in Niigata Prefecture and accompanied you to the presentation.
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
It was a project that involved only license sales without any implementation support, so there wasn't any significant work involved, but it became our first transaction with your company and the trigger for becoming partners.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
We are very pleased to have become partners with a company like yours that is deeply rooted in the region. Did you start sales activities related to FLEXSCHE after that?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Yes, we did. We attracted customers through visits and direct mail, and first held seminars in Joetsu and Tsubame-Sanjo in the central part of the prefecture.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
And you quickly secured your first implementation, right?
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
That's right. At the first seminar, there was a long-standing customer who was considering a system related to production planning at just the right time. This customer was a comprehensive chemical manufacturer with quite challenging scheduling conditions, and they were about to settle for another company's production scheduler, which required compromises in that area.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Chemical scheduling is difficult, isn't it? What were the specific conditions?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
We had to create a plan that balanced production while using by-products generated during the production process in a way that their concentration did not fluctuate excessively. With your company's assistance, we were able to solve this through programming, which became an advantage and led to the decision to go with FLEXSCHE.
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
However, it wasn't as if implementations were decided one after another. We continued to focus on seminars for sales, and while there were many prospects, decisions were slow to come, and then the Lehman Shock hit during that period.
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Projects that seemed close to being finalized were frozen one after another, and we ended up with no orders for about three years.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Nevertheless, you continued your sales activities, didn't you?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Of course. I never thought of stopping the handling of FLEXSCHE, and I received information from your sales team that there were many promising customers, so I kept at it, believing in that. Although sales were slow, the turnout for seminars was consistently good.
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
Even though the economy was bad and there was no investment mindset, there was a learning mindset, and everyone was proactive in gathering information, right?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
At that time, I was actively doing a lot of prototyping at sales destinations. I would aggressively promote, receive some factory data, take it back, model it, and show it to the customers. Then, I would be told things like "this model doesn't work" or "there are these conditions," and I would take it back again, doing this repeatedly for free. This led to a deeper understanding of the manufacturing industry and FLEXSCHE itself.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Did you handle it yourself instead of leaving it to the engineers?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Yes, that's right. Our company considered FLEXSCHE to be an important solution in the future, but it was difficult to assign unpaid work to busy engineers, so I, who was at the center of the FLEXSCHE business, took charge. But it was interesting work for me. Although there were hardly any orders, I feel that the accumulation of that work is now paying off.
Realization of collaboration among FLEXSCHE partners

-
FLEXSCHE
-
How often are FLEXSCHE seminars held now?
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
Currently, they are held three times a year. We conduct them in Joetsu, Nagano, and Hokuriku, with each session lasting two consecutive days at two venues.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
In Nagano, you co-host with 'Kissei Comtec Co., Ltd.' (a FLEXSCHE partner), right?
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
Yes, that's right. When there was an inquiry, we had the opportunity to make contact, and it led to a discussion about collaboration. Although there aren't many actual collaboration achievements in projects yet, the seminar turnout has improved. We both have clear products we want to sell, and I think we've managed to establish a complementary relationship.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
You're also collaborating with other partners, aren't you?
-
JCS Miyazawa
-
We are collaborating with two other FLEXSCHE partners. One of them is in a nearby market area, and we were originally competitors, but we had the opportunity to talk at a partner meeting, and now we've built a good relationship.
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Since we don't always have a stable flow of our own projects, I believe it's important to accumulate know-how by continuously handling FLEXSCHE through collaboration. If there is work, the skills of the technicians will also be honed. Currently, we have six engineers involved with FLEXSCHE, but in the future, we want to increase that number, deepen our understanding of the manufacturing industry, and develop staff who can be entrusted with everything on their own.
The system is only evaluated when it functions and produces results.
We will continue to focus on that

-
FLEXSCHE
-
How is our company's support in your sales activities?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
Even when there is something to discuss, the response is quick, and I think it's excellent. For inquiries that have the potential to become competitive, you accompany us to the business meetings from an early stage, and such actions indeed increase the chances of securing orders.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
And I would like to hear your evaluation of FLEXSCHE Corporation as a whole...
-
JCS Matsuo
-
It's a bit difficult to say directly in front of you (laughs), but I feel that it's a company where capable people gather. When I went to consult during 'OpenDay,' they could answer any concerns, which is very helpful. FLEXSCHE Corporation gives a strong impression of being a company that thrives on technical prowess, and it closely aligns with the kind of company we aspire to be. Although the work we do is different, as a package manufacturer and system integrator, the fundamental technology and values are common, and I hope our engineers can have more contact with your employees and be inspired. In that sense, I want to increase the number of FLEXSCHE engineers in the future.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Thank you. Hearing that makes us feel more determined. Finally, could you tell us about your company's policy towards work and your personal commitment to your job, not limited to FLEXSCHE?
-
JCS Matsuo
-
I believe that what we create only generates value when it is properly used and is only evaluated when it produces results. As a company, we are committed to that, and we want to continue to work diligently to contribute to our customers. Personally, I have a desire to be a unique presence in this world. It's boring to just do what anyone can do and be done with it, so I want to work with the pride that 'this is a job only I can do.' I also want our employees to aim for that and hone their skills.
