Young Interview
Interview Date: February 2018

JCS Computer Services CorporationSales Department Sales Section Chief Keiichi Hirose
Development Department Development Section Toru Maruyama
We asked two key figures in JCS's sales and development about how JCS, initially struggling to link sales activities to results with FLEXSCHE, managed to consistently secure orders, and how FLEXSCHE has been successfully introduced as a system that satisfies customers.
The keywords that emerged from their words, based on numerous experiences, were "usability" and "flexibility."
Sales and Engineers Supporting FLEXSCHE

-
FLEXSCHE
-
Please tell us about your involvement with FLEXSCHE within your company.
-
JCS Maruyama
-
Since joining the company in 2014, I have been working mainly as an engineer involved with FLEXSCHE.
-
JCS Hirose
-
When I first joined in 2008, I was almost exclusively focused on sales for FLEXSCHE. Now, I handle other solutions as well, but FLEXSCHE is still the most involved.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Have both of you always lived in Joetsu?
-
JCS Hirose
-
Yes, I have. Although there was a period when I left for further studies, I returned to Joetsu when I started working.
-
JCS Maruyama
-
I am originally from Niigata City, but I came to Joetsu for work and have been living in this area ever since.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Did you gain similar experience in your previous jobs?
-
JCS Hirose
-
Previously, I worked in a completely different field in sales, and it was only after joining this company that I got involved with IT.
-
JCS Maruyama
-
My first job was in the manufacturing industry, in a department that handled machine maintenance. I then became a programmer at my next job, and eventually moved to my current position.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
So you have experience in the manufacturing industry. Does that give you an advantage in handling FLEXSCHE?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
Yes, I believe so. I have acquired basic knowledge of factory production flows, which I think gives me knowledge that other engineers might not have.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Could you also tell us about how you spend your days off and your hobbies?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
My hobby is table tennis. I played it throughout my student days, and recently started again, playing about once a week to refresh myself.
-
JCS Hirose
-
Mr. Maruyama is quite serious about it. You even won a tournament, didn't you?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
Hehe.
-
JCS Hirose
-
Last year's company trip was to a facility where we could play table tennis, and everyone was eager to "defeat Mr. Maruyama!" but we couldn't win at all.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
We have a table tennis table in our office, so please feel free to come by! Mr. Hirose, how do you spend your days off?
-
JCS Hirose
-
In the past, my hobbies were cooking and going to the gym, but now I have a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old, so I'm busy with childcare (laughs). My wife usually handles the cooking, so even when I want to cook, she says, "I've already bought the ingredients, and please watch the kids," so I rarely get to be in the kitchen. However, I do get to spend time with my kids, and playing with them is a great way to refresh myself.
"FLEXSCHE" from the Perspective of Practitioners

-
FLEXSCHE
-
Mr. Hirose, since you joined in 2008 and were in sales, did you have quite a challenging experience initially?
-
JCS Hirose
-
Right after I joined, the Lehman Shock occurred, so it was indeed a tough time. As I mentioned earlier, I focused solely on FLEXSCHE and mainly worked on uncovering new customers, but it didn't lead to any orders at all.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
How was the reaction at your sales destinations?
-
JCS Hirose
-
FLEXSCHE itself was well-received. However, as everyone knows, the manufacturing industry as a whole wasn't in a mood to invest at that time.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
That was a period when our company's sales also plummeted. It's good that we managed to overcome it.
-
JCS Hirose
-
Indeed. Now, the manufacturing industry is booming, and we're happily overwhelmed with work.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
When did you start securing projects related to FLEXSCHE?
-
JCS Hirose
-
Around 2013. Once we secured one project, we were able to consistently receive orders.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Was there any change around that time?
-
JCS Hirose
-
Firstly, the sales department began to understand how to sell FLEXSCHE, and the willingness to invest in the market started to recover. However, I now feel that the most significant factor was that we continued our activities even during the period when we couldn't sell, which increased our sales destinations and allowed us to build relationships with customers where we could quickly set up appointments and have business discussions. That was probably the period of sowing seeds necessary to secure orders for FLEXSCHE.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
It became a valuable asset for your company's future.
-
JCS Hirose
-
That's what we aim for. Now, we have many collaborative projects with other partners, so we want to maintain that balance while also increasing our own projects.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Please tell us about your actual sales activities. How do people react when you introduce FLEXSCHE?
-
JCS Hirose
-
Production Scheduler自体toまだご存知No方も多く、「Iんな良いものisあったのか!」and言ってくださるIandis多い.Day々の計画to手書きandMicrosoft Excel®で作るFactoryis未だに多いので、なおさらFLEXSCHEis画期的なSystemに見えるのだI believe.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
What are the main selling points of FLEXSCHE that you emphasize in sales, Mr. Hirose?
-
JCS Hirose
-
It's actually feedback from customers who have chosen FLEXSCHE, but the main point is "usability." Other production schedulers tend to be more for system administrators, and on-site personnel find FLEXSCHE easier to handle.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
How do you feel about the competitiveness when it comes to a competition for selection?
-
JCS Hirose
-
We receive evaluations that there is a significant performance difference compared to other production schedulers. As a salesperson, I can confidently promote it. However, there are cases where other products are chosen based on superficial pricing or political reasons without a thorough comparison.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Is it your impression that if they purely compare, they will definitely choose FLEXSCHE?
-
JCS Hirose
-
Yes, I think so.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Mr. Maruyama, as an engineer, where do you see the strengths of FLEXSCHE?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
As an engineer, the "flexibility" is attractive. It can be customized to accommodate various cases, allowing us to create something that customers can utilize. Because it can be customized in many ways, customer expectations rise, and requests keep coming, which is challenging, but it also motivates us to create something better.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
What was your impression of FLEXSCHE when you first started handling it?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
When my supervisor explained FLEXSCHE to me, I felt it was software with very easy-to-understand graphics, such as charts. However, as I delved deeper into the technology, I kept discovering new things and was amazed by its depth. I am still deepening my research every day.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
In development, you utilize the 'FLEXSCHE Developer Mailing List,' don't you, Mr. Maruyama?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
In challenging cases where we need to realize customer requests, the guidance we receive through the mailing list is very helpful. Moreover, the response is quick, allowing us to proceed with development smoothly.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
How is the usability in development?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
It's great that we can use not only DLLs but also scripts. With scripts, we can quickly make changes using a text editor, and even a few lines of code can allow for various customizations. It enhances the speed of development.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
If you have any requests for FLEXSCHE in the future, please let us know.
-
JCS Maruyama
-
Even though I thought I had properly integrated it, there are times when it doesn't work as expected. It would be great for developers if a feature like an alert to identify the cause could be added.
To provide better solutions to customers

-
FLEXSCHE
-
Next, I would like to ask about your company's sales department, the entire system development department, and about yourselves. How many staff members in the sales department can introduce FLEXSCHE?
-
JCS Hirose
-
There are three of us, including myself, who are the main members, but we generally handle it as a manufacturing team.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
How about in the system development department?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
When I first joined, I was the only engineer specializing in FLEXSCHE, and there were a few staff members who started after the implementation support was decided. Recently, the number of staff who can properly handle FLEXSCHE has increased to six. Even so, we are currently so busy that we can't handle work outside of manufacturing.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Your company has a very wide market area, but when it comes to sales, you travel to each of those places, right? Is driving the main mode of transportation?
-
JCS Hirose
-
Yes, we visit places like Niigata, Nagano, Ishikawa, Toyama, and Fukui by car. The farthest customer is in Fukui, and it takes three and a half hours one way by car.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Does it take that long?
-
JCS Hirose
-
With a round trip taking 7 hours and a business meeting lasting about an hour, 7 out of 8 working hours could end up being spent driving. So, we try to eliminate waste by staying overnight in Ishikawa and Fukui.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
What is the most challenging time for you when working?
-
JCS Hirose
-
As a salesperson, it's definitely when we can't receive orders. If that continues for a long time, I sometimes wonder if I'm not suited for this. No matter how many years pass, as long as I'm in sales, I'll always be chasing numbers, so I'm constantly aware of that as I work.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
When you feel that way, how do you recover?
-
JCS Hirose
-
It's thanks to my colleagues. There was a time when I was seriously considering quitting, and at a company party, I ended up crying and expressing my frustrations while sharing drinks. My colleagues gave me many words of encouragement and support, which helped me hold on. Even after that, they would talk to me during work, making me feel supported.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
You have wonderful colleagues.
-
JCS Hirose
-
Indeed, I thought, "I can't quit when I have such great colleagues." When I finally secured an order after that, I always remembered my gratitude.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful story. How about you, Mr. Maruyama?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
I don't have as good a story as Mr. Hirose, but there was a project that took a year to go live, and it was very tough when things weren't going well.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
What aspects of the project were challenging?
-
JCS Maruyama
-
We couldn't quite create something that satisfied the upper management of the customer, and there were times when things just didn't go well. We were very busy, repeatedly trying different approaches with the client's representatives.
-
JCS Hirose
-
Mr. Maruyama, you seemed really busy during that time. I think you were always coming to the office even on weekends.
-
JCS Maruyama
-
However, when the project went live, the joy was proportional to the effort, and I remember feeling relieved. Not just for this case, but whenever something we've worked hard on functions well and shows results, I feel glad to be doing this job.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Mr. Hirose, when do you feel a sense of fulfillment?
-
JCS Hirose
-
It's definitely the moment when an order is secured. About three years ago, purely by chance, I received order forms on two consecutive days, and I was so excited I wanted to shout.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
It's the moment when your sales efforts bear fruit.
-
JCS Hirose
-
Yes, both of those cases initially said they didn't need a production scheduler, but after spending a long time visiting them, I finally received the orders, which made me especially happy. Ideally, I should be producing results quickly one after another, but the orders obtained after extensive communication with the customers are all the more rewarding because of the effort involved.
-
FLEXSCHE
-
Finally, could you share your personal thoughts on approaching your work, not as a company but as individuals?
-
JCS Hirose
-
FLEXSCHE is the software that has shaped my foundation as a salesperson since I joined the company. Now, FLEXSCHE has become a pillar of our company's solutions, and I feel proud to be involved in it. However, the current situation is not the goal, so I want to continue to grow myself and be involved in expanding our solution business, including FLEXSCHE.
-
JCS Maruyama
-
Hearing that customers have been able to utilize FLEXSCHE and improve their operations is truly gratifying and fulfilling for me. FLEXSCHE is constantly evolving, so I want to continue honing my skills and growing to provide better systems to our customers.
